Moving from Hawaii to Fort Worth's west side: the paradise tax, computed

Hawaii households run the steepest all-in gap in this series — top-tier income tax stacked on the nation's highest cost of living. Two lines actually get worse in Texas, and we'll name them.

The income-tax and cost-of-living math

Hawaii runs twelve brackets from 1.4% to 11% — the most brackets of any state — with the 11% top rate starting at $325,000 single / $650,000 joint, and a new 13% bracket above $1 million taking effect for tax years after December 31, 2026. Act 46's relief is real (the standard deduction roughly doubled to $8,000 single / $16,000 joint for 2026, with wider brackets phasing through 2031), but a middle-income household still surrenders a solid four figures annually, and the General Excise Tax quietly adds ~4.5% to nearly every transaction, services included — a sales tax that groceries and doctor visits don't escape. Layer the 50th-state premium on food, energy, and shipping, and the honest summary is: the same salary simply buys a different life here. Median island housing above $1 million meets a corridor where $350,000–$500,000 buys new construction in an A-rated district.

The two lines that get worse — said plainly

First, property tax: Hawaii's effective rates are the lowest in the nation (~0.3%), so the corridor's 1.9–2.35% is a genuine multiple increase even after the $140,000 homestead exemption below — it's just levied on a house costing a third as much, which is why the dollar bills often land surprisingly close. Second, insurance: Hawaii's average premium (~$660–$800, hurricane coverage separate) is the country's cheapest; Texas's is among its most expensive. Budget both honestly before celebrating the income-tax line. Everything else — groceries, utilities (real corridor numbers here), gas, services — falls, most of it steeply.

What you give up

Everything the word Hawaii means: the ocean, the climate that needs no thermostat, the culture, the pace. This move is almost never about preferring Texas — it's about arithmetic that stopped working, and this corridor is where the arithmetic works hardest in the other direction: family housing with slack in the budget, schools that anchor it, and 20 minutes to a major airport (DFW's Honolulu nonstops keep the door open). Sequence it gently: the relocation hub's rent-first path exists exactly for moves this large, starting with the match quiz.

The Texas side of the ledger, computed honestly

Texas has no state income tax — and funds itself instead through property tax, which on this corridor runs from 1.902% of assessed value in Weatherford (Weatherford ISD) to 2.353% in the Fort Worth-in-Parker-County slice of Aledo ISD, with Willow Park at 2.091% and the city of Aledo at 2.056% (2024–2025 published rates; the full stack is on the corridor tax table). On a $425,000 house in Willow Park, the sticker math is about $8,890 a year — but Texas's homestead exemption now removes $140,000 of value from the school portion (raised by the November 2025 constitutional amendment), which cuts roughly $1,690 off that bill, landing near $7,200 a year before any additional city or county homestead percentages. The homestead cap then limits assessed-value growth to 10% a year while you live there. Two more honest lines: Texas home insurance is also among the country's most expensive (the corridor's hail belt is why), and sales tax here is 8.25%. The property-tax filing sequence that makes all of this real is in the buyer's property-tax playbook.
