What does your rent actually buy?

Slide to your rent. The math includes Texas property taxes (they're real out here) and insurance — not just the loan. This is an estimate to start a conversation, not a loan offer.

Three honest footnotes

1. Ownership costs more than the payment. Maintenance is yours, and Texas property taxes rise with values. Budget for both.
2. If you might leave DFW inside ~3 years, renting can genuinely win. I'll say so to your face.
3. The real number comes from a lender. A soft pre-qual takes 10 minutes and doesn't touch your score — any reputable local lender can run one, and it turns "roughly" into "exactly" — and it's the kind of homework that makes lenders take you seriously.

"But I assumed I couldn't qualify"

Most renters who tell me that are running on an assumption, not a denial. FHA loans run 3.5% down with flexible credit; VA loans are 0% down for eligible service members; and down-payment assistance programs exist across Tarrant and Parker County. And if your credit genuinely isn't there yet, rent-to-own programs start around a 550 score. There's a door for almost every situation — the trick is knowing which one is yours.
